Building a future of belonging for all.

Juneteenth Barcelona is an organizing committee of volunteers dedicated to connecting and inspiring Barcelona's African diaspora and allies — and to raising our collective visibility in the city.

Why we
do this.

At Juneteenth Barcelona, we believe that the African diaspora and allies in Barcelona deserves a space to gather, celebrate, and be seen. Our mission is to honor the history of Black liberation while building a living, breathing community in one of Europe's most vibrant cities.

Barcelona is often celebrated for its modernist architecture and Mediterranean beauty. But it was also shaped by deep, complex ties to the African diaspora that stretch far beyond its borders. As a major Mediterranean port, it was entangled in transatlantic trade networks that included the trafficking and enslavement of Africans.

We invite you to see Barcelona differently — not just as a European capital, but as a city meaningfully connected to and influenced by the African diaspora. By walking these streets with intention, we honor stories that have been cast aside and the people who were forgotten.

Rooted in community. Grown from purpose.

Barcelona

As the population of Black Americans and diaspora communities has grown in Barcelona, the need for a shared cultural moment has grown with it. Juneteenth provides that anchor — a day to ground ourselves, increase our visibility, and become better connected with the broader city.

Given the concerted efforts to erase and repress knowledge of Black history and culture globally, Black Americans and diaspora members abroad have a vested interest and responsibility to continue the traditions and remembrances of Juneteenth in their adopted communities.

Our committee of volunteers — from across the diaspora, from the US, the Caribbean, Africa, and beyond — organizes each year with three goals: to connect, to make visible, and to liberate. We also recognize Barcelona as an important, functional node in Black history, as opposed to a romanticized symbolic ideal.

We uplift the ideals of liberation and honor the people who fought — and continue to fight — to secure and maintain freedom for everyone.

What we're
here to do.

Everything we do flows from three commitments we made when we started this committee.

01
Connect & Inspire

Connect and inspire Barcelona's African diaspora and allies, creating meaningful space for encounter, collaboration, and belonging across cultures and backgrounds.

02
Raise Visibility

Raise our visibility in the city — honoring Black history and culture in Barcelona, and the stories that have been marginalized or cast aside in the telling of the city's story.

03
Support Liberation

Support our common liberation, uplifting the ideals of freedom for all people and recognizing Barcelona as a meaningful, functional node in Black history — not a romanticized ideal.

Our committee

15+ volunteers united by a shared belief that Black culture and history deserve to be celebrated, seen, and honored in Barcelona.
