Community Day & Party All Night

International food fair, music, and cultural celebration

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865 — the day the last enslaved African Americans finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. We carry that legacy of liberation and joy into an all-day fair & party packed with good vibes, better beats, and a celebration of culture, community, and connection.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Who is the Juneteenth Barcelona committee?

We are a passionate team of volunteers united by a shared belief that Black culture and history deserve to be celebrated, seen, and honored in Barcelona. We aim to be an integrated community for residents and visitors to enjoy and learn from on an important day in Black American history that relates to the global diaspora of Black and brown descendants from Africa.

What is your mission?

We believe that the African diaspora and allies in Barcelona deserves a space to gather, celebrate, and be seen. Our mission is to honor the history of Black liberation while building a living, breathing community in one of Europe's most vibrant cities.

What is the Juneteenth event?

Juneteenth Barcelona is a day of diaspora unity and joy. The event brings together artists, performers, chefs, musicians, merchants, and other members of the African diaspora and allies to gather, celebrate, and be seen. The event is open to residents and visitors in Barcelona.

What is BJuneteenth?

The BJuneteenth events are monthly Juneteenth-inspired meetups to share inspiration, connect with people from the African diaspora and allies, and support collective liberation. The meetups occur every month on the 19th as a year-round reminder of the importance of building community and sustaining liberatory practices.

What is the history of Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is an American holiday that commemorates June 19, 1865 — the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and finally delivered the news of emancipation to approximately 250,000 enslaved people. That moment came two and a half years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, and two months after the Civil War had ended. Slaveholders in Texas, far from Union lines, had simply refused to enforce it. The name Juneteenth is a portmanteau combining the words "June" and "nineteenth."

Why celebrate Juneteenth in Barcelona?

As the Black American and African diasporic communities have grown in Barcelona, the need for a shared cultural moment has grown with it. Juneteenth provides that anchor — a day to ground ourselves, increase our visibility, and become better connected with the broader city.

Given the concerted efforts to erase and repress knowledge of Black history and culture globally, Black Americans — and the broader diaspora community by extension — have a vested interest and responsibility to continue the traditions and remembrances of Juneteenth in their adopted communities.

Our committee of volunteers — representing the United States, Caribbean islands, African countries, and more — organizes with three goals: to connect, to make visible, and to liberate. We recognize Barcelona as an important, functional node in Black history, as opposed to a romanticized symbolic ideal. We also uplift the ideals of liberation and honor the people who fought — and continue to fight — to secure and maintain freedom for everyone.

A Day of
Diaspora Unity
& Joy

At Juneteenth Barcelona, we believe that the African diaspora and allies deserves a space to gather, celebrate, and be seen. Our mission is to honor the history of Black liberation & creativity while building a living, breathing community in one of Europe's most vibrant cities.

We honor history by celebrating Black culture, and building bridges across the African diaspora and allies living in and visiting the city.
